Thursday Releases

It's day four of National eSmart Week!

Today's theme isCyber Buddy Day

Cyber Buddy Day focuses on teaching students the values of caring for others, friendliness, respect, valuing difference, including others and responsibility. The activities and webinars offered today aims to create positive behaviour, as well as build students’ self-esteem, connectedness, social skills, trust and sense of community.

Activities

Toolkit Activity:

What constitutes too much time online?  What are the repercussions?

Today’s Cyber Buddy activity is well suited for junior and middle school students to discuss together what it looks like for someone to spend too much time online (tired, yawning, red eyes, sore head etc.) and someone who has a balanced time online (outside playing, doing homework on the iPad, playing in the local soccer team).

Show the worksheet on the interactive white board and use as a discussion tool. Have students draw the same three circles to represent what too much screen time looks like to them, what balanced free time looks like, and what their own free time is made up of. Encourage students to use their preferred learning style, use pictures to represent ideas and/or use words to represent ideas, and/or create a pie graph to represent allotments of time.

New Activity:

Digital Buddies is a cross-age activity. Senior buddies work with junior buddies to help them learn to use digital devices safely. Older buddies can work with teachers to ensure they understand the material and that they can modify it for junior buddies understanding. Older children can develop concepts, graphics and other material in this interactive and fun activity.
