Celebrations at Wanneroo Library

The City of Wanneroo Libraries proudly held their eSmart Status celebration event last month and were thrilled at the turnout with representation from their local council, neighbouring libraries, Telstra and students from 3 local schools.

Wanneroo eSmart Library

In light of their acheivement Sooz Dalgleish, Library Coordinator at Wanneroo has shared with us how eSmart helped them to convince their Local Council to allow library users to access social media.

Wanneroo Library services has recently updated their public PCs due to out-dated technology. The previous PCs did not have any type of social media or web 2.0 technology enabled and lacked supporting documentation for public use.

To help gain access to social media for their library users Wanneroo's eSmart journey focused on creating appropriate documentation to support their library users in the smart, safe and responsible use of digital technology.

Wanneroo Library staff reviewed current policies pertaining to internet use, and subsequently developed an internet agreement for their community.

The implementation of this internet agreement, combined with the review of the policy and the inclusion of the eSmart doctrine of smart, safe and responsible use of technology, satisfied all requirements to have social media activated for users of Wanneroo Library.

Being eSmart meant that they could show their council IT department that they were properly equipped with documentation to support having social media available to library users.
